Pelikan got its start in 1838 near Hannover, Germany, as a paint and ink factory. Sold to employee Gunther Wagner in 1871, the firm adopted the Pelikan name and logo from Wagner's family crest. After a half century making writing inks, Pelikan produced its first fountain pen-and the first reliable piston filling system-in 1929. In 1984, after a change in ownership, Pelikan recommitted itself to production of fine writing instruments and inks, and today stands in the first rank of pen companies worldwide.
